Manchester Women's Shelter
The National Zakat Foundation is aiming to launch Manchester’s first dedicated Muslim women’s shelter by January 2013 insha’Allah. Following on from similar Shelter projects in London and Birmingham – both of which launch in August 2012 – the National Zakat Foundation aims to reach out and help even more women through the launch of its third shelter.
The shelter will provide a safe and welcoming environment for homeless women who are facing hardship and destitution. As well as food and emergency accommodation, the shelter will also provide a range of support services which women will be able to access if required. Such services include counselling, benefits and resettlement advice, Qur’an and Islamic study classes as well as basic English classes. The services will help enable women to rebuild their lives in a positive manner insha’Allah.
Iqbal Nasim, Project Manager at the National Zakat Foundation is keen to launch the service in the North, stating:
"Alhamdulillah we have learnt a lot in the process of working towards the launch of shelters for Muslim women in both London and Birmingham. With this experience, we now wish to extend our network of shelters to Manchester, one of the UK's most heavily populated Muslim cities. I am very confident that should we raise sufficient funds over the next three months, we will be in a strong position to launch this vital service early in 2013 insha'Allah."
Over the next few months, the team will be busy searching for a suitable property in the right location in which to set up the shelter. Discussions with a number of key organisations in Manchester have already commenced in order to help identify a reputable partner with a strong track record to help deliver the shelter insha’Allah.
