Five years strong
Five years ago, we learned that hundreds of vulnerable Muslim women in the UK lived without something they needed; something basic that we took for granted – safe shelter. We believed that we could solve this problem together and this laid the foundations for the launch of National Zakat Foundation. Since then, NZF has set up three supported housing projects for homeless Muslim women, a fourth project for young male ex-offenders and most significantly, NZF has processed applications for over 3,000 individuals and families in the UK suffering from some form of destitution.
Together, we have achieved incredible things to change the reality on our doorstep.
Whilst the demand for local Zakat distribution grew, so did the demand for Zakat education, calculation and collection. Our beneficiaries were not limited to Zakat recipients, but included Zakat payers too. Together, they represent the third pillar of Islam. By serving Zakat payers in the UK as well as local recipients, our vision to enable every payer in the UK to calculate and pay their Zakat correctly became clearer. No other organisation has this as their objective: that all Zakat that is due to be paid, is paid. Alhamdulilah we have come a long way and to date, you have helped us to collect over £4.5m of Zakat across the UK.
So what’s next?
For NZF, Zakat is not a means to an end – Zakat itself is the end goal. Upholding this pillar is the key to our success in this life and the next. Establishing the proper collection and distribution of Zakat is of great spiritual and economic concern. Allah promises power to the believers who pay Zakat.
[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of [all] matters. [Qur’an 22:41]

Zakat Awareness Week 2016
Zakat is sometimes viewed as a charitable act. Zakat is first and foremost an act of worship. In the Qur'an, 'Zakat' is mentioned 28 times interlinked with the word 'Salat'. For most of us however, Zakat is the least understood pillar of Islam. Last year NZF launched Zakat Awareness Week as a solution to this problem. Have you ever asked yourself: When do I pay my Zakat? What is the Nisab? Who is eligible to receive Zakat? From Monday 23rd-29th May 2016, NZF will be hosting a series of talks, workshops and Q&As across the UK and online to equip you with all you need to know about Zakat. If you would like to go the extra mile and volunteer to support our events team during Zakat Awareness Week, please do get in touch.
In a Prophetic tradition we are taught that holding onto Zakat, which is both a debt to Allah and a debt to the poor, has a devastating impact on the believer.
"Zakat is never intermingled with any amount of wealth without destroying and rotting it." [Bayhaqi]
Catching up with unpaid Zakat from previous years need not be an overwhelming or stressful exercise. If you have missed Zakat payments from previous years, NZF is here to help. Missedzakat.com is your one-stop solution filled with practical resources to enable you get up to date in a way that is simple and easy to understand. Remember it's never too late to make up missed Zakat, so do not wait until Ramadan to relieve yourself from this burden. Restore the blessing in your wealth today.
Your Zakat at work
In the month of April, NZF received 102 new applications and distributed £70,412 of Zakat. The team received a high volume of applications requesting assistance with debts. Debts often have a domino impact on other aspects of people’s lives, sometimes resulting in relationship breakdowns and homelessness. Individuals are not only given financial support but are given advice and support on staying debt free. By helping people with financial planning, applicants reap longer term benefits. Whilst Zakat is utilised only as a last resort in such circumstances, such applicants are supported in a way to facilitate their independence and self sufficiency thereafter. If you would like to make a difference to the needy on our doorstep, why not volunteer with our Zakat distribution team? Apply here.
