"The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the wayfarers; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, Wise." (The Holy Qur'an, Chapter 9, Verse 60)
1. We empower individuals
Through our Economic Empowerment Programme, we award financial grants wherever we feel able to improve somebody’s long-term situation.
This support is used for meeting the costs of basic essentials such as food, shelter, clothing and travel costs.
The grant also funds empowerment activities that help people in hardship reduce their expenses or increase their income, and often includes job training, legal costs and debt relief.
Your Zakat has supported over 10,000 people in the UK.
2. We empower leaders
NZF’s Leadership Investment Programme invests in emerging Muslim leaders and organisations that are working for Islam to flourish in the UK.
They seek to improve one or more of the following:
- Public perception towards Islam and Muslims
- Religious scholarship and religious literacy
- The representation of Muslims
This programme provides access to grants, mentoring support and funding that allows individuals to access education or other opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise be able to pursue.
In 2018, we supported 30 individuals and 16 vital projects and institutions. Examples of organisations include Cambridge Muslim College, Muslim Council of Britain’s Centre for Media Monitoring, and Ramadan Tent Project.
3. We help you calculate your Zakat
NZF helps to ensure Zakat payers are paying the right amount. We do this by providing online articles, an online Zakat calculator, online and telephone support, as well as online and printed Zakat guides that cover what do when you haven’t paid your Zakat, when you’re paying Zakat on pensions, and when you’re paying Zakat for a business.
4. We collect your Zakat
NZF provides Zakat payers with multiple options to ensure a safe and convenient transaction. Payers can pay online, by bank transfer, by post, through Al Rayan bank branches, through mosque collections or in person at the Zakat Centre in London.
