Supported Housing Projects

NZF is the first charity in the UK to set up dedicated housing projects for homeless Muslim women in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

Inspiration for the projects emerged from shocking stories about Muslim women sleeping rough on park benches or selling themselves to feed their children.

Our high quality supported housing provides safe accommodation for destitute women who have nowhere else to turn. In addition to the three supported housing projects for Muslim women, NZF has also partnered with St Mungo's Broadway and the Better Community Business Network to deliver a housing project for young Muslim male prison leavers.

Whilst Zakat is not used to acquire or maintain the buildings, it is used to cover the operational costs of providing a support service to their vulnerable and Zakat eligible residents. This supported environment is essential in developing their confidence, self-esteem and ultimately their ability to live independently upon leaving the project.

Qualified support workers deliver emotional, spiritual and practical support to the residents who are eligible for Zakat and help them cope with any difficulties they are facing.

London Project – launched October 2012

Our collaboration with St. Mungo's Broadway - one of Britain's largest homeless charities - marked the opening of our first women's shelter in London and in the UK. This is a 14 bed project where residents have access to emergency accommodation, counselling, benefits and resettlement advice, Qur'an and Islamic study lessons, basic English classes and a number of recreational activities.

Birmingham Project – launched March 2013

The partnership with Trident Reach, an award winning social investment charity based in the Midlands, helped NZF successfully deliver the Birmingham project in March 2013. This 8 bed property has provided a safe haven to local women and is the first of its kind in the Midlands.

Manchester Project – launched June 2014

NZF teamed up with Threshold, a leading provider of supported housing and other services to vulnerable people, to establish Manchester's first shelter for Muslim women. This 5 bed project opened in June 2014 and has widened access to our services for Zakat recipients in the North of England. The project has been warmly welcomed by local community partners including the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner.

Date Palm Project – launched June 2014

The Date Palm Project is a groundbreaking supported housing initiative in North London for young male prison leavers within our community. Our delivery partner for the project is St. Mungo's Broadway. The aim of the Date Palm Project is to provide a powerful combination of housing, employment and support for young Muslims leaving prison in order to reduce the chances of re-offending and transform their lives. For too long our community has lacked an effective and coordinated solution to solve the "prison problem" affecting young Muslims.
