I’ll never forget the day I finally decided to leave. Somalia was the only home I’d ever known. I loved my country, but it was just too dangerous. I owed it to my wife and kids to at least try and reach safety and give them the peaceful family home they dreamed of.
Even though I’d grown up around danger, the journey to the UK was the scariest thing I’ve ever gone through. I just kept telling myself it was for the best and Allah would help us reach safety.
Arriving in a new country as refugees, with no money, was very daunting and such a culture shock. But when we moved into our new house, we felt it had all been worth it.
Sadly, our neighbours didn’t see it like that. Not long after we moved in the Islamophobic and racist abuse started. Every day my children had to face the insults as they went to and from school. It felt like we couldn’t go anywhere without being targeted and I spent my life trying to defend my family from the attacks.
I was so upset. I’d taken us from one nightmare to another.
